Crab Cay, Exumas
I’m sure the turquoise waters and white sand beaches provide a tempting lure for optimistic land developers, but the reality of completing projects in this semi-developed country must make it more difficult than many envision.
Great ideas that get started but are soon abandoned seem to be a hallmark of the Bahamian landscape. Yesterday’s hike on the island was a most amazing example of one such project. Our navigational charts say the project started in 2006 and construction was halted in 2009. It’s a planned resort community where the developers built the beginnings of roads, the beginnings of a deep-water canal, and a beautiful pavilion overlooking the iconic waters of the bay. Unlike others we’ve seen, this one got pretty far before it was abandoned. The pavilion and surrounding gardens are beautiful and the bathrooms are works of art!
Maybe someday someone will come finish what was started.
