Between the Majors
February 18-19 Staniel Cay to Between the Majors
We had plans to meet new cruising friends from another Caliber sailboat for snorkeling, but realized our morning would be better spent moving to a more protected anchorage. The wind had shifted overnight and Dagny was a little rocking and rolling. With winds expected to build, we pulled anchor and moved about 1.5 miles to a spot offering good protection between two islands.
There’s a nice little beach nearby so we gathered snacks and drinks and met our snorkeling friends there. We spent a nice afternoon/evening hanging out with them.
Yesterday was rainy and blustery. Our first truly dreary day here. (Don’t worry, the water was still amazing!) Dagny welcomed the fresh water wash down and we spent the day napping, reading, playing games, and generally finding indoor entertainment. We even managed to watch a movie complete with popcorn and sodas; a real treat on our solar-dependent floating home!
The rain stopped in time to bring us outside before the end of the day. Only by looking closely did we notice the large shadow swimming by our boat. The neighborhood shark paid us a visit as we enjoyed the beautiful sunset.
As always, we pour over the weather forecasts to determine our next safe anchorage. The whiteboard photo shows tide and wind for the next several days. We look at trends and then at the chart to find anchorages based on wind speed and direction. We figure out how we are going to get there and then how comfortable it will be overnight. We’ve gotten pretty good at knowing when to just hang out where we are and when it’s advantageous to move on. For now, we will hang here. Tomorrow or the next day we will sail with the wind to an anchorage with protection from the north winds.
